What does it mean to be human?

I've been told this question is one of the hardest questions known to mankind, that there is no simple answer to this, the answer must be surrounded by scientific facts, as well as personal beliefs. But the problem is, I need to know this for one of my highschool questions and its not easy for a 14 year old to answer this mind-boggling question. Can anyone help?
